The aim of this study was to examine the feces of free-ranging foxes and coyotes for the presence of Neospora caninum oocysts. Feces were collected from 271 foxes and 185 coyotes in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, processed by sucrose flotation, and examined by light microscopy for the presence of coccidian oocysts. In 2 fox and 2 coyote samples, oocysts morphologically and morphometrically similar to oocysts of N. caninum were observed. DNA was extracted from these samples and subjected to nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers to the N. caninum-specific Nc5 genomic sequence. Through DNA sequencing, alignment of the sequences of at least 3 clones from each isolate to sequences deposited in GenBank revealed 95-99% similarity to the Nc5 sequence of N. caninum. PCR using primers specific for Hammondia heydorni failed to yield an amplification product from these DNA samples.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) released 16 more tagged coyotes statewide recently as part of the Coyote Harvest Incentive Program, and any hunter who successfully takes and reports one of these tagged coyotes will be rewarded with a free lifetime license.
The Coyote Harvest Incentive Program was created in 2016 by the General Assembly, which directed SCDNR to develop and implement a coyote tagging and reward program. Annually, SCDNR traps, tags and releases four coyotes per game zone (16 total). Anyone who successfully takes and reports a tagged coyote will be rewarded with a free lifetime hunting license. The person reporting the tagged coyote has the option to designate anyone for the lifetime license such as a child, relative, or friend.
Over the last five years, a total of 96 coyotes have been tagged and released, including the 16 that were recently released. To date, about half of the tagged coyotes have been reported taken. Coyotes tagged in any year are eligible for the lifetime license incentive. The specially marked tags provide contact information directly on them. Only the uniquely identifiable SCDNR coyote tags are eligible for the lifetime license as there are potentially some coyotes that have been tagged for research purposes.
The Game Commission makes available two online Hunter-Trapper Education courses for students who prefer to learn through an online format. A training certificate recognized throughout North America is awarded after passing a test at the end of either online course.
In-person Training: ($15) For students 11 years and older. Before attending the in-person session, students must complete an independent study that takes about four hours and can be done online or by requesting a student manual. The student then attends a 1-day, 8-hour classroom session. Register for a Successful Bowhunting Class. If there are no classes listed in your area, contact the Game Commission region office serving your county.
Online Training: ($30) Students 16 years and older can complete this certification entirely online and print a temporary Bowhunter hunter education certificate (a permanent certificate will be mailed). Take the Pennsylvania-Approved Bowhunter Course online.
Certification recognized throughout North America: Participants successfully completing these courses are permitted to use cable restraints to take foxes and coyotes in Pennsylvania. Certification enables you to purchase a furtaking license to trap furbearers. Certification does not replace Basic Hunter-Trapper Education required to hunt furbearers with a hunting license.
In-person Successful Furtaking Certification: Before attending the in-person session, students must complete an independent study, which takes six to eight hours and can be done online or by requesting a student manual. The student then attends a 1-day, 6-hour classroom session. This course includes cable-restraint certification. Register for a Successful Furtaking Class. If there are no classes listed in your area, contact the Game Commission region office serving your county.
In-person Cable Device-Only Certification: This course is approximately four hours. Certification is required for any trapper using cable devices to capture foxes and coyotes in Pennsylvania. Register for a Cable Device Certification Class. If there are no classes listed in your area, contact the Game Commission region office serving your county.
Online Cable Device-Only Certification: ($34.50) Students 11 and older can complete the cable device certification entirely online and print a temporary cable device certificate (the permanent certificate will be mailed). The course takes about two hours to complete.
All animals need food, water, and shelter to survive. Loss of habitat, due to urban growth, increases the chance for wild animal/human interactions. Many animals move and find suitable habitat away from these areas. Raccoons, opossums, coyotes, foxes, and skunks thrive in the urban environment.
Despite their seeming ubiquity across urban landscapes, ecological impacts presumed to occur from free-ranging cats may be mitigated by larger mammalian carnivores [5]. In North America, this largely involves the coyote (Canislatrans), as this species has expanded into most metropolitan areas [8]. The mesopredator release reported by Crooks and Soule [5] was largely driven by the coyote-cat relationship, in which they provided correlative evidence of intraguild competition between the species. However, the extent to which coyotes influence cat numbers or movements, and the mechanism(s) responsible, have not been rigorously assessed for any system. 2ff7e9595c
